Showing across both of Victoria Miro's gallery's, the Miami-based American artist presents new paintings inspired by the decorative arts and the short-lived Memphis group founded by architect Ettore Sottsass that sort to challenge Modernist values.
The title of this exhibition comes from the influential but short-lived Memphis Group, a movement founded in Milan by designer Ettore Sottsass. During his childhood in the 1980s, the Florida-born artist Bas was inspired by the Milan Group's work. The look the group codified, which Bas has now drawn upon, features a strong colour palette, bold line and a little humour. All of these works feature a handsome young man in a range of settings, some more surreal than others. The result is rather lovely.
