Time Out says

Top historian Simon Schama collaborates with the NPG gallery curators for this special display exploring the development, character and meanings of British portraiture. Portraits from the vast collection will be dotted through out the gallery, displayed according to theme rather than chronology. The selection of works spanning multiple periods will be grouped together exploring the following: power, love, fame, people and self. The exhibition coincides with a five-part TV series on BBC Two and the release of an accompanying book of the same name.
