Hot on the heels of the Royal Horticultural Society's Chelsea Flower Show in May, this high-summer event takes place in the spectacular grounds of Hampton Court Palace and features 34 gardens as well as marquees showcasing work by some of the country's leading designers and nurseries. There are many opportunities to buy plants, especially at the final-day sale on Sunday, and gardening equipment. This year, the conceptual garden category should get the traditionalists' feathers ruffled with the theme of the 'changing environment'; expect a multi-faceted mass of fridges from Caroline Tait and John Esling, a design based on a giant grass claw gouging the earth from Jon Tilley, and 'the desolation of smaug and beyond' from Catherine Macdonald, who explores the effects of forest fire and subsequent new growth.
Alongside the gardens will be a range of other natural environment features, including the Butterfly Dome collaboration with the Eden Project, featuring a magnificent array of beautiful tropical butterflies, celeb-customised henhouses being auctioned for charity, and the Bee Garden and Marquee, providing demonstrations and advice on bee husbandry. And of course there’ll be celeb speakers, including Bill Oddie, Kate Humble, John Craven, Linda Barker and Tim Wonnacott.
The 'RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show Exclusive Preview Evening' takes place on July 8 (5.30-10.30pm; from £53). The first two days of the show (July 9 & 10) are reserved for RHS members. Tickets are valid for either the whole day or just the afternoon. Each full-paying adult may bring a maximum of two under-16s free of charge.
