This 1920s-style cocktail bar, which calls itself ‘The Bar With No Name’, is in the backstreets of Islington, away from the massive downer that is Upper Street.
Drinking here is an experience limited by capacity – there are only 30 seats, and once you factor in the pianist tinkling out Gershwin jazz classics, there’s no room to swing anything. So it’s a wise idea to plan ahead and book a table.
And it’s definitely worth the hassle for the cocktails, which are the most experimental in London. The Prairie Oyster, for instance, consists of tomato ‘yolk’ with spices, sherry and horseradish vodka, served in a ceramic ‘shell’ and designed to be slurped back like a bivalve. The Terroir blends distilled clay, flint and lichen. It really rocks. Other creations contain ‘woodland bitters’ or patchouli-infused mint.
