One of Hackney’s hidden gems, this eclectic boozer draws a crowd of loyal locals to an interior that mixes candlelit antiques and modern curiosities.

Food during the week comes courtesy of Pieminister, with tasty, traditional roasts on a Sunday. On summer weekends, they fire up the barbecue for juicy burgers, fillets of sea bass and grilled halloumi, accompanied by all the salad you can eat.

Cocktails (around £8) are a hit, especially when they’re half price on Thursday’s Ladies’ Night (which also includes homemade cupcakes and a vintage clothing sale), though a bloody mary with horseradish seems the favourite on weekend afternoons. Draughts are less exciting, with Red Stripe, Staropramen, Stella Artois, Timothy Taylor Landlord and a guest ale on tap.

The varied calendar of events also includes foreign films (with free popcorn) on Mondays, while DJs and musicians enliven the weekends.

I have moved to hackney recently and have found that this is the best pub so far discovered. The staff are lovely. The food is fantastic (on a Sunday evening there is free roast potatoes and gravy!). They play a good range of eclectic music. Some of the draughts are a little boring but they do have hoegarrden and leffe on tap! Smoking area is decent and it has an under cover sofa area. The decor is cosy and traditional with dashes of quirky and Nordic memorabilia (it's run by Norweigans!). Only con is pricy pints but that's expected. I highly recommend.
