The Castle has been home to a public house since 1832, although its newly revamped decor is anything but 19th century. This Young's pub now features a British gastropub menu with Meantime brews in tanks, among many other tipples.
The new garden - where a car park used to be – was added in summer 2014. It has various outdoor seating areas including cabana-style huts and outdoor heating on demand.
The menu holds few surprises - burgers, pies, roast meats, fish and chips. Our chicken, ham and leek pie was standard pub fare, served with mash and a tiny and superfluous saucepan of gravy.
The main attraction here is undoubtedly the garden (on warm days).

Fantastic local pub with a huge outdoor space and an excellent upmarket restaurant! Well worth a visit anytime.
Perfect place to meet up with friends. Brilliant atmosphere...great staff and good selection of drinks available at the bar
Huge pub with lots of space inside and outside - in the summer the beer garden is really enjoyable. Perfect if you're a big group (or a group of mums with prams!). Food is usually OK - but they have their off days and I think there are better places for Sunday roast in Tooting. A bit impersonal .
It's cool with a huge mix of different people visiting with an amazing beer garden, great food and friendly staff.
Four of us had a meal and throughly enjoyed it. Beef roast, gluten free pork roast and the others had burgers. Service was good and it is dog friendly inside as well as outside. I appreciated the decor and we enjoyed the friendly happy atmosphere. On the day we went the sun was shining and garden was busy with young people having a good time. We had a lovely time and met the resident pooch called Jazz! We will be back!
Huge pub! You wouldn't realise from outside. Beautiful interior decoration and cute little huts out in the garden. It's like an oasis of awesome off the busy high street.
Dear Time Out,
I work at the Castle and I noticed all of these reviews were written last year almost immediately after the reopening. I'm sure there was a slight learning curve, but I am confident that there has been a dramatic improvement. As a regular customer and a member of staff I can't imagine why anyone would not give a five star rating. This pub is genuinely one of the best in South London. We are always packed. So I encourage Time Out to conduct another review as soon as possible.
The Castle Barman
Newly renovated, we came to have a a pleasant drink on Friday... Very disappointed to say the least - extremely loud music from the minute we walked in at 5.30pm music was knocking as like it is a night club!!! If I wasn't meeting friends in the area we wouldn't stayed.
Food is ok, although my burger was half cold on the bun...
Having been a regular in South London, my friend and I were keen to explore this newly renovated pub. We went in, walked around the place for about 2 minutes and thought this is quite desirable. So we pleasantly asked if we there was a table available for lunch. One member of their staff replied "Sorry we're not taking any more customers...". There was a lot of tables empty and we were happy to wait and have a drink at the bar. This opportunity was dismissed by the man completely. He then proceeded to elaborately point out all the food tickets lined up on the serving bar advocating our stupidity for even asking if we could wait for a table. He then proceeded to say "If you want fast food, you can go to KFC or McDonalds...", he thought the comment was worthy of a comedy award, boring me to death with his knowledge of fast food chains, we walked out. The attitude of "We don't really need you as a customer..." is quite apparent here, very arrogant and obnoxious.
Looks can be very deceiving, decor is nice but the customer service is absolutely appalling. This man's attitude was so abhorrent, I am uncertain on how long this business can last. We eventually found out that this man was the manager after consulting with a more friendly member of staff. She apologized but this is unlikely to curb the horrendous ways her manager is conducting the treatment of customers.
Having not been able to sit down to eat or drink, this place has been truly tainted by poor hospitality. I am glad I will not be setting my foot in this place again.
Arranged to meet some friends here as I heard it had been recently refurbished and what a great evening we had. The food was excellent and the beer was good......if a little expensive but having previously been a customer at the "Old" Castle I and my friends were made welcome and will definitely return. Just wish it was North of the river and closer to my home.
After opening night I'm not welcome person, reason being rood to staff who made more mistake then rest of the staff together. Guys do not leave any feedback, it's almost a crime to say that some things were wrong. And if you're from on other countries even worse. Good luck
A bit of a nightmare on a sunny day. Children running free in the garden, takes ages to get served as the bar is super short and staff new and inexperienced- have no idea who came when and who is next. Would rather go somewhere else, as it just makes you angry rather than relaxed!
I walked into this pub on Sunday only to be told they have pre-booked all 250 meals for the day and weren't taking any walk in orders. Despite the place being empty. It's been newly refurbished and looks well presented but the manager clearly had the 'we're the new place to be and don't need your custom' attitude when I suggested it was poor planning not to allow a single walk in order when he simply smiled, shrugged and said 'we're fully booked mate'. Neither me, or my local friends will frequent this place again. He obviously doesn't know the power of bad press!!
