Tastemaker

This is a fairly off the radar member of the Firmdales Hotel Group and a surprising hidden gem. While the decor is much more casual contemporary than its sisters and brothers, it's still up there in food and service. The tasting menu for £22 seems too good to be true, but I can hand over heart say that my starter of goat’s curd, artichoke and broad bean salad with mint and olives followed by a roasted pepper, tomato and mozzarella frittata would have held their own at double the price. The goat's curd was warm, slightly firm and not at all pungent and the frittata had that slightly melted soft cheesy middle that was complemented well with the spinach and pesto salad. The only let down was the mango pavlova for dessert - the accompaniments of a generous dollop of passionfruit cream and fresh mango couldn't be faulted, but the meringue had a strange crumbly powdery texture that I've never come across before in meringue, and was not the sticky-centred pavlova we were expecting. This is the only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars, though it almost seems unfair, as if I had ordered a different dessert it might have been a 5 star review. All in all, the lovely atmosphere, flawless service and free bread basket (gluten free bread also available) made us feel hardly shortchanged by the dessert and we had a lovely evening.
