Benelux beers are ubiquitous these days, but there was a time when few venues purveyed pilsners and lagers from the Low Countries. This ornate-fronted hostelry on the edge of Chinatown was always the historic exception. First a refuge for homesick Dutch sailors, then an overseas base for the wartime Resistance, De Hems is now a convivial two-floor pub whose dark wood interior and sturdy bar counter, lined with Grolsch Weizen, Maredsous and Bellevue Kriek taps, are unmistakably Netherlandish. More unusual beers such as Orval, Vedett, Kwak and many other bottled varieties are stored behind the bar, and a menu board alongside offers bitterballen, frikadellen and other Dutch snacks.

We was shock with service!!! It was low level!!! Barman couldn't manage the situation, then manager came OVER and done worse!!! He couldn't understood that foot was bad, he just said, that we have to leave the place!!! We were 10 people - we gave them around £100 bill, but they get stuck with £3 nachos plate :) they didn't recover or gave us money back about non-happy food!!! We couldn't believe what we are hearing!!! We are from 26 to 32 years old men / girls and this was the first time that we had this kind of treatment !!! we are not coming back!!! EVER!!!
O my god, The hems is the bst !!
Great Belgian beers, decent Dutch snacks, cosmopolitan ambience. A haven for people who love the Low Countries.
