Time Out says

3 out of 5 stars

As the sign outside says: ‘This is a real pub. No big screen. No music. No fruit machines’. Indeed, you’ll just find low-level chatter in the one main room amid light-wood decor, fresh flowers, framed caricatures and rows of hardback novels from Macmillan-era book clubs.

Pride of place, though, goes to the monthly changing list of guest ales chalked up by the bar, featuring the likes of Ilkley Black and Coastal Merry Maidens Mild. Superior sandwiches (home-cooked roast turkey or topside of beef) are fairly priced at £3, while ‘Dennis’s famous’ chicken-liver pâté is similarly own-made and served with toast. Lager drinkers may choose between Pilsner Urquell, Grolsch and Beck’s Vier, oenophiles can opt for the acceptable and affordable house La Casada, or a standard merlot, Rioja or sauvignon blanc.
