A pub as amiable as the Bear comes as something of a surprise on this least appealing arm of Camberwell's beleaguered crossroads. A former Victorian gin palace dominated by a horseshoe bar, the place has scrubbed up nicely and oozes warmth, especially when it is illuminated by candlelight. Despite this, it's still very much a locals' boozer with Ram's Revenge and Old Trip complementing the usual suspects lager-wise. The rear room, decorated with stopped clocks and china dogs, makes for a great place to sample the affordable and hearty British food.

Time Out DEFINITELY needs to revisit this place. I love it here, it's a gem, and I have eaten here possibly 10 times and have never had a bad meal. They do fantastic meat and fish dishes, home cured salmon and ham, superb desserts.. everything about this place is lovely. I am tempted to keep quiet about it though..
Complete communication failure between the staff resulted in an hour and a half wait for food and then no food forthcoming. Apologies consisted of blame being aportioned to various members of the more than ample staff but no one taking responsibility. Told to return but really on this showing why would one bother?
On an overall scale of 1-10 the Bear warrants at the very least an 8 as the only downside is the outside due to it's non salubrious location otherwise the food, decor & staff deserve 10/10.....
Time Out need to revisit to update their review!
One of my favourite pubs in London, the food and atmosphere are always fantastic and very friendly service.
Last Tuesday I had chicken pie and it was boring. The chips were not cooked properly
and tasted like they were cooked twice, really soggy.
I am 100% in agreement with Stuart's glowing review. Since discovering the Bear some months ago, it has become a favorite haunt of my partner and I. The food, first of all, is far superior to the majority of 'hearty' and 'affordable' pub grub you get in London. I would go so far as to call all the dishes I have sampled excellent, and a fish stew we had there one Saturday a couple of months ago was "exquisite" ! The bar staff is always friendly and enthusiastic, and to top it off they seem to know something about the interesting guest beers the Bear always has on tap.
The Bear is my new 'pet' pub, and I am hard pressed to think of a pub anywhere that I enjoy more. My partner is sick of hearing me go on about how much I love it. I think Time Out needs to pop in again and reconsider their tepid review.
Have just discovered this gem of a pub. Am more than a little surprised at the average review, this place is one of the best pubs I've been to anywhere. Great surroundings, great food, good atmosphere and weekly guest beers. What more do you want?
