Bars & Pubs

  • Roebuck

  • Run by the same people behind the Eagle in Clerkenwell, by all accounts this is the Royal Free bar that never was. But in stark contrast to the grey monster of a hospital that towers above the place, this pub's a stylish, airy place equally suitable for a quick cuppa or a raucous party in the basement bar. The food is an adventurous take on pub grub - the halloumi burger is still a favourite - and they have a good range of beers on tap, from Früli to Staropramen, as well as guest beers. Venture into the garden in summer and you'll find many a medic nursing a pint.

The other reviewers were spot-on earlier this year, but in the last 5-6 months they've really turned it around. A change of staff seems to have done the trick - much friendlier, and a decent rethink to the menu with some good touches like a sausage platter for sharing over a few beers. Now pretty much back to the standard of 4-5 years ago.

I agree with Pepe. I was a regular here, before the buy out by Youngs. Now I drink at the Garden Gate 150 yards away, run by the same people that ran the Roebuck until the takeover. The food portions have gone up in price and down in size, and the drinks have all gone up at least 10%. Avoid.

Dear Time out, I agree with all your comment re the Robeuck untill they refurbished the place. Since then and even if the interior is a bit more stylish and trendy...everything else changed in a bad way...before it was cool with alwaysfriendly staff, good and cheap food...now it is completely the opposite...this place cost a fortune and the staff is clearly unfriendly. For instance guess how much cost one burger with a pint a Leffe....GBP 15!!!
Yes, a burger with cheese and bacon cost GBP 11,50 and the pint 4,50...and when I ask the waistress if she did not make a mistake with the bill..she starred at me hinted like that if I am not happy I could f'&k off...for sure, I willl not be place where I use to relax anymore after work. Good Bye Roebuck. dear Time out, please update urgently your reader on what is going on there. Cheers.
