In south Wimbledon’s backstreets lies this ale drinker’s nirvana, named after the famed 1830s racehorse. A much-loved locals’ boozer, the Sultan is the only London pub owned by Wiltshire’s Hop Back Brewery; on the weekly beer club evenings, chattering middle-aged locals enjoy the delights of GFB, Entire Stout, Summer Lightning and Quad
Hop for the princely sum of just £1.90 a pint (carryouts are also available). The saloon bar is named after the beer-loving Ted Higgins, an actor from the original cast of Radio 4’s The Archers; a smaller public bar shares its decor of cream walls and green panelling. There are also five cosy little open fires dotted about the place. There’s a weekly quiz and the dartboard sees enthusiastic use: the patrons’ many successes are celebrated with a trophy case full of little silver darts.
