Buried away off Bishopsgate in a cobbled corner close to Spitalfields Market where city suits and Shoreditch collide, the Water Poet is a multi-tasking gem with a bar, restaurant, cool pool parlour, a downstairs theatre and a super-duper sun-trap of a beer garden. Adorned in dishevelled decadence, it's all down-holstered leather and velvets, gilded metal and myriad chairs on which to flex your pint-curls; from Chesterfields to church pews, school chairs to picture-house seats. There are weighing-in scales as you enter. Not entirely relevant but worth a mention. Clientele range from open-collared city sippers during the week and market meanderers on the weekend.
A bevy of Belgians under the Artois banner, Timothy Taylor and Flowers Original hold the fort on hand-pull and there's Staropramen and Hoegaarden too.
There's serious sausage action on the bar and BBQ menu, sharing platters and, people say, a rather renowned roast of a Sunday.
Entertainment consists of 'Witty in the City' comedy nights every Thursday, the (rather odd) cabaret night on a Saturday while, upstairs, there's pool and plasmas dotted both inside and out.

Thoroughly recommend The Water Poet for a large Sunday lunch after a visit to Spitalfields market, a wander down Brick Lane or general Shoreditch shopping.
We always include them in our plans when we visit London, mainly because we've tried and tested many other places but found the Water Poet to be the friendliest and best for a proper roast dinner. Huge portions!
Very large garden out the back, which is not that obvious from the outside of the pub as it is completely private. Great for a game of pool too.
Another great night at the Water Poet, happy to mention it for them. Planning to go there for lunch on Sunday with family.

Hi
I just wanted to say a huge thanks for our dinner last night, and in particular to your waitress.
She was great, looked after us brilliantly all night, and nothing was too much trouble for her, even though we had some difficulties with some of the guests stuck in snow and turning up late. Not often you find that sort of service in London - she is an asset to you!
We all had a lovely night. Please pass on our thanks to her and the waiter who was there too.
Thanks Sinead.

Very relaxed place but the service is great. Love the decor. The staff made me really welcome when I moved into the area. Really friendly crew. Best Sunday lunch I've ever had. Hope my mum doesn't see this.
Just back home from night at Water Poet. Good times. New barmaid gave me a bacardi instead of a vodka, and bar manager buys me and my boyfriend a drink to say sorry for themistake. They can make those mistakes anytime they like. Good times. Love this pub. great staff.
I often spend Sunday at the Water Poet, often being the operative word. I find Sunday lunch there good, incident packed and fun. Here's why:
It is incredibly busy, with people like me and their friends, 30ish, some single, some not, some with kids, some younger, some with their parents. Great buzz. After lunch is over they have some jazz in the garden.
I don't know how many lunches they serve, but it's a lot, it comes quickly and it's really good. They do run out of some food, so if you're having a party for more than 10 people the trick is to pre-order if you can. I had my birthday there recently and when I told a waitress what a good time I had she was so pleased she started to cry. Weird. Service is great.
Fabulous bar just to the side of Spitalfields Market with a huge amount of rooms to lounge in, spend evenings out with the crowd or take your folks out for Sunday lunch. Was recommended this place by colleagues and have since spent many a long afternoon relaxing in the now heated garden. Must be the largest outside pub space in the area. Menu extensive, portions generous and worth every penny..... Lovely staff too.
The Water Poet is by far my favorite place to while away a Sunday afternoon in East London. The food is always exceptional and there is nothing better than relaxing in the heated garden or on one of the couches and reading the Sunday papers that are provided by the bar and enjoying a long, lazy Sunday lunch. The music is always great and the quirky staff make a huge effort to satisfy my most whimsical demands.
The Water Poet Sunday lunch is definately my favourite in the area. The atmosphere in the bar is friendly and relaxed and it is immediately evident that this bar is unique and not part of a chain. The quirky staff are friendly and interesting and do their best to satisfy the most whimsical demands. Its a great place to chill with the Sunday papers and enjoy great food.
This is the same guy who posted a review on View London, only that wasn't as bad as this. Looks like he is working himself up into a fine old frenzy. He nearly stopped us going, but I'm glad he didn't. We had a great time. The food was great and so was the service.
