This commendable bar-club comprises one expansive room - divided by a wall with an oval hole in the middle, giving the illusion that half of Hoxton is here - and a small pool room downstairs.
Cocktails are scrawled up in black felt-tip on white tiles by the bar, most in the £7 range and given in-joke names such as a Shoreditch Twat (Jägermeister, tequila and Chartreuse shaken with vanilla and egg) and Don't Go to Dalston (Bombay Sapphire gin, Martini Bianco and falernum). All but one of the dozen wines - Marqués de Morano rioja crianza, Mâcon-Villages Beauvernon Thorin - come by the glass, while the draught beer option is Sagres.
Sharing platters include fajitas and English barbecue ribs, while light bites (£2.50-£6) involve whitebait with garlic aïoli and own-made pork scratchings.

Had an amazing time music bar staff was awsome. Door staff was very friendly and helpful. Will be going back again.
Very abusive door staff. Had a terrible experience. Strongly suggest you avoid.
Cool venue but food not up to scratch. Just had lunch and it was very bland. Simple seasoning & dressing would make the world of difference. Such a shame.
I went to this place for the first time recently and was really impressed! It has a really open and friendly feel probably due to open plan upstairs but I also found the staff helpful when asking for a cocktail recommendation. Just a nice place to chill and have a drink with my friends. I noticed they do pretty off the wall events as well- life drawing etc so will definitely be going back!
Had a particularly bad experience at this place during brunch with some friends. My food arrived late, some 10 minutes after my friends received theirs. I then found a strand of hair in my couscous salad. I took it back to the bar to complain. Was offered no apology, just a "we'll get you another one, ok?" Waited 10 minutes for replacement food to arrive. This dish also had hair in it. I'm not sure whether it was the old dish, being masqueraded as a freshly prepared one. We complained again. Was still offered no apology, just told that none of the kitchen staff have hair. Well - it wasn't my hair - so whose was it? Only when a friend and boyfriend raised complaints did the manager offer to refund our meal (at that point I did not want any food from this establishment), with the added comment, again, that all the kitchen staff have no hair. Will certainly not be visiting this place again.
The club does have good food going for it, but the attitude of the staff in particular talking about the male queeny dj who takes 'requests' is unbelievably rude, the kind of thing that gives real meaning to the phrase 'shoreditch twat' Just for that reason I would not go again, or perhaps on a different night than a Thursday. 'Friendly atmosphere?!' I don't think so!!!
wicked bar. best in shoreditch. they are selective of who they let it - just make sure you dont we are a suit or turn up in your best shirt and pointy shoes. no stags or hens allowed in either so all good! £4 for spirits and £6/£7 cocktails is actually really good for the area so not sure how some see this as 'not good for value' - generally just a great place to hang out with mates
Busy bar, generally ok, nice bar staffs. Not good for value though.......
There is an awful female bouncer at the door as well. Anyone know who she is?
ha ha the books are in the basement. I LOVE the book club, best place to go on a Sunday if you are feeling delicate and in need of some tlc. i've always found the staff really friendly and helpful.
I've been to the Book Club a dozen or so times, at different times of day. I've always found the staff helpful, professional and friendly. The atmosphere is fun and the drinks are reasonably priced. I fully recommend it!
I work locally and go to the book club morning, noon and night. I find the staff super friendly and have never encounted rudeness. Yep, you do have to queue most nights but thats because they are so popular. you just have to get down early. drinks are actually cheaper than most venues in shoreditch which is why i frequent there. are you sure you went to the same place? the book club rocks.
overpriced drinks, my food was served cold and had hairs in it, rude staff.
We were also forced to queue outside for 20 minutes for no reason other than to make the club look popular, a truly awful place to go,
I love this place. Great for hanging out during the day (free wi-fi), nice juices, coffees and cakes. Staff beautiful Shoreditch types. And free ping-pong!
Bald barman, extremely rude and stuck up. Yes the venue looks trendy and attractive but why cant that come with quality customer service and food.
Its on a pricy side aswell : ( utter disapointment
If the initial 5 minutes was anything to go by, pretty poor as I was ousted within that time with barely a foot in the door for not moving inside quick enough while paying. The bouncer needs to get a humour inplant and some people skills. The only upside? I got my £5 door entry fee back.
Incredibly rude barman, surly is probably the best word
Shut the kitchen early with no warning, no apology and were again very rude
Pro
A pleasant space to sit for a coffee when it's quiet on a weekday. Open plan, exposed brickwork, hotch potch of furniture.
Con
So-so food.
They need more people looking after the tables. We went in the other evening and sat at a table that hadn't been cleared and no one came over to do it. I had to ask at the bar eventually. There were enough people skulking around but it seemed like only 1 girl actually waitressing.
Went here the other night. the DJ booth was a table with a deck on it by the kitchen. but that was not my main problem. I had to send the food back 3 times before finally taking it to the open plan kitchen myself! the chef told me that since he only sold 1 of the dishes a night he was not going to cook it propperly - so he was attempting to use a microwave and a grill rather than turning on the oven to bake the thing! the manager then claimed they were 'not fine dining' and that I should not expect so much. certainly the thing cost me enough to expect that at least that the food would be edible. (it was a baked camembert, and without the baking the cheese was hard).
