It's not true to say that Stoke Newington has been crying out for a spot like this; by and large, the locals have seemed content with the array of weary boozers, formulaic gastropubs and corny bars that dot N16. Still, the area is a lot richer for its arrival. Formerly a miserable pub, it's had its tired decor ripped out and replaced by… well, not much. The walls are plain and the furniture is wooden, a decorative ethos that seems built on the elusive phrase 'shabby chic'.

It's nice enough, as is the no-messing food (burgers, pies, cassoulet, all around a tenner), but the real appeal is provided by the beer: ten handpumps offer real ciders and rarely seen brews from the likes of Crouch Vale, Dark Star and Thornbridge, plus local microbreweries such as Camden Town Brewery, Redemption from Tottenham and Brodie's from Leyton, while the bottles in the fridges head beyond Britain to Belgium. A welcome addition.

I think this review underrates this pub. The decor is good and certainly not "shabby chic" and the beer and food excellent.

Great variety of beer on offer, as long as you do not want regular mainstream beer that is. Its great to have a regular and different variety of beer on offer. Beer is sourced from local brewers, or niche brewers. an excellent choice . Staff know their beer and can guide you in your choice. Food is good, with large portions. Not a wide choice but sufficient variety. The sausage platter is great and the pork spare ribs portion is a huge finger licking good size. Staff friendly. No TV to spoil the atmosphere...a great place to meet mates for a good beer and chat. On Wednesday evening there is a knitting club that meets and knits...great fun. Excellent Sunday roasts that are popular....get in early for a place.
