Funny things, awards - they can recognise excellence, stimulate conversation within a scene and raise wider awareness of it throughout the culture; they're also inevitably partial and can provoke division or encourage reductive thinking. It remains to be seen how these inaugural London Cabaret Awards are received but they've already sparked discussion throughout the scene. On the jury for the dozen gongs are Catia Ciarico, Jayne Hardy, Lisa Lee, Alexander Parsonage (with collective experience from the magic, burlesque, alt drag, circus scenes and beyond) and Time Out cabaret editor Ben Walters. The event, produced by Paul L Martin, features performances too - and you can vote for the Time Out Audience Award at http://www.timeout.com/cabaret.
