In spite of the futuristic, purple-lit stairs leading down from pavement level, it can be tricky to find this diminutive club in a converted Victorian loo; make the effort though and you’ll be rewarded. Some staggeringly clever design means that although there’s room for just 60, CellarDoor never feels claustrophobic, though the toilets require a bit of courage: the glass doors only cloud over when locked. Musical-theatre cabaret crooners, drag queens and snuff parties (as in taking snuff) are the order of the day, giving this sleek establishment a vintage feel. Nearly all shows are free and often great fun – EastEnd Cabaret regularly appear and Champagne Charlie's Tuesday night open mic night is an institution.

Throughout the screening of ‘Mamma Mia!’ I kept clocking the security guard in the corner. What was he thinking, I wondered, as Pierce Brosnan belted out a power-ballad version of Abba’s ‘SOS’? For Bond purists, it must be like seeing your dad in ...

‘Well, they asked me about it, and damn it, I didn’t know either…’ In the words of author Raymond Chandler, this is as close as we’ll ever get to figuring out just one of the many mysteries surrounding ‘The Big Sleep’, Howard Hawks’s iconic thrill...

  • Reactionary pap the story may be, but Wise’s blockbuster musical is still grossly underrated (and frequently knocked by those who’ve never seen it). It’s superbly edited and shot, Ernest Lehman’s script keeps things moving along nicely, the Nazi t...

It’s like a Pavlovian reaction. I know it’s coming but I can do nothing about it. The strings swell for the introduction to ‘Over the Rainbow’ and already I’m wavering. Judy Garland gets a few lines into the song and I’m emotional wreckage. Ever...

I've been to Cellar Door on a few occasions and always have a rip roaring time. My personal Cabaret favourites East End Cabaret were always on top form when performing here, with a no hold approach to audience participation. The cocktails are delicious, along with the complimentary popcorn, it's nothing but fun, frolics and festivities.
