  1. The Four Quarters
    Get pissed with Pac Man

Gaming club nights are a Planet topic, but here’s a whole darn bar dedicated to vintage video games. It’s teeming with classic arcade cabinets (from ‘Space Invaders’ right up to ‘Street Fighter II’) and there are tournaments for button bashers to battle it out. Or just guzzle the impressive selection of craft beers instead. Keep an eye out for film screenings and one-off events, such as the Oktoberfest special from October 3 to 5.

    Mode
    Berlin-style clubbing in Notting Hill

The venue with more names under its belt than Sean Combs (the space has previously opened as Neighbourhood, Subterrania, 12 Acklam Road and most recently Supperclub) rises again with a sleek, industrial feel and a programme chock-full of secret guests for its ‘Mode Undisclosed’ parties – Maya Jane Coles and Maceo Plex have previously raved it up. It’s house and techno central here, but there’s also a posh restaurant if you want sophistication before shape-throwing.

  3. Number 90
    Canal-side beats and arty treats

Multi-functional bar and restaurant space Number 90 is already shaping up to be one of London’s most exciting new venues. It’s hosted tons of ace house, techno and disco parties, including a belter with Chicago legend Derrick Carter, and has strong ties with institutions like Phonica Records, Autumn Street Studios and Hackney WickED arts festival. And should there be some kind of season-defying summer 2.0 miracle any time soon, there’s also a terrace.

  4. Shapes
    Warehouse raving and roller skating

A warehouse space in Hackney Wick? Crikey. But hold the sarcasm, for the arty endeavours at Shapes are definitely worth investigating. As well as hosting cutting-edge DJs (Gilles Peterson, Cyril Hahn, T. Williams), the large floorspace has, bizarrely but brilliantly, proved perfect for roller discos – funk crew Stevie Wonderland and grime team Jamz have both hosted skating events. You want even more versatility? Okay, there’s even a family rave (for adults and kids) from Big Fish Little Fish on Sat Sep 21.

  5. Stage 3
Fill your belly, treat your ears

Food might be the new rock ’n’ roll, but we’d rather have both, thanks. That’s why this hip hub attached to the Hackney Empire theatre and gig venue is so appealing. The cool but comfortable bar space is the brainchild of pop-up pros Platterform. It hosts DJ nights, live music and all manner of global, foodie goings-on, including Afrobeat night Unwanted (Fri Sep 19), a music showcase from fashion publication ‘Love is the Law’ (Sat Sep 20) and Indonesian street food market Pasar Kaget (Sun Sep 21).

  6. The Stillery
Fill your belly, treat your ears

This brand new Camden venue is the latest project from the team behind popular east London spots The Old Blue Last and Birthdays. The owners hope to offer a similarly on-point mix of live bands, DJ sets and parties with their new venture, but aimed at a slightly different crowd, being located outside the usual Hackney and Shoreditch borders. The venue has hosted kooky rave Cat Face (pictured) and upcoming events include indie-electro club night White Heat and bassy mash-up Sai’s House Party.
