Christopher Wheeldon, one of the world's best classical choreographers, returns to the Royal Ballet with a new full-length work, based on Lewis Carroll's ever-curious Alice. Wheeldon is well known for his abstract neo-classicism but not for narrative ballet, so this will be an interesting leap. It's set to a score by Joby Talbot (the first new full-length score the Royal Ballet has commissioned in 20 years, no less) and based on a scenario by Nicholas Wright, who adapted 'His Dark Materials' for the National Theatre.

WOW!! Every time you think, "No they won't be able to do that Wonderland effect..." seconds later -there it is. You can judge an Alice interpretation by how well the rabbit hole scene is visualised. Here it is a triumph of multi media integration, and sooo beautifully extended. There are no short cuts in this ballet, that elusive timelessness of the book is fundamental in every scene. And for me, the apex of ballet is where the secondary dancers flow together to form a new visual unity, this is gorgeously done, they turn into flower petals! And the flamingoes...siiiiiigh I'm in luuurve with ballerinas... all over again. The best ballet by far the opera house has put on in the 4 years I've been regularly going.
