The popular playground for kids aged up to 12 has recently been refurbished to include a play tunnel, timber pergola. Improvements have also been made to the vast wooden pirate ship sailing a sea of sand, which is still playground's main attraction since it opened in 2000. When children tire of competing for control of the ship's wheel and escapades involving cabins, pulleys and ropes there are three tepees to provide inspiration for other imaginative games and delightful play-sculptures hidden among the scented shrubs, willows and bamboos that make the place a treat for adults, too. The provision of loos, nappy-changing facilities and a café mean it's easy to hang out here for hours. Time your visit carefully; the playground can get very busy at the weekend if the weather's fine.

Fantastic playground! Having walked all the way there from the Science museum, we also found out the hard way exactly whereabouts on Kensington Gardens it's actually located. Do not confuse it with Diana's Memorial Fountain, which is in the Hyde Park bit and a good ten or 15 minutes' walk away! :-) Once there the kids absolutely loved it, apart from the queue to get in, which I guess was unavoidable on a hot Saturday. But it was quick enough. Re. food, we had a bag full of picnic food we only managed to get the kids interested in once we left the park, they were so busy discovering everything it has to offer.
Actually - twinkle's comments about the location of the park are also incorrect. The closest tube station to the playground is actually Queensway - just cross the road into Hyde Park and it's on the right behind a hedge (just off the broadwalk before the carousel. You may have to queue to get in, but the limit ensures that the actual park is not too busy and there are loos and food options in there.
Also, Time Out is showing the wrong location within Hyde Park. The playground is by Lancaster Gate! I learned that one the hard way!
This playground is really something, but beware the kiosk - it's outside seating only, no high chairs and a reduced menu in winter months - don't get caught out!
