He’s back! Sheffield’s prime psychedelic balladeer – a mate of Jarvis Cocker and collaborator with Arctic Monkeys – is about to follow up his Mercury-nominated ‘Standing at the Sky’s Edge’ with a brand new LP. Last time round he shifted his template from a twangtastic Roy Orbison/Johnny Cash hybrid into dark and gnarly, groove-ridden rock, recalling Mark Lanegan and even Noel Gallagher. But his hefty back catalogue ensures plenty of noir-ish crooning, and his sharp onstage banter is a big bonus.
