The name of this Persian restaurant and wine bar on Portobello Road translates as 'pomegranate' - a fruit native to Iran and popular throughout much of the Middle East. It's little surprise, then, to see its sweet and sour seeds sprinkled throughout Anar's contemporary Persian menu.

That menu features dishes ranging from dolmeh, torshi and salads of lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber with walnuts and feta cheese to meats cooked on the charcoal grill, slow-grilled chicken wings and fesenjan khoresht - an authentic Persian stew of hand-shredded, slow-cooked poussin with crushed walnuts and pomegranate purée. Keep an eye out for daily specials, too.

The dessert selection continues the authentic theme - think shirini (traditional Persian biscuits), ab havij with bastani (carrot and saffron ice cream) and faloodeh (a Persian sorbet made from thin starch noodles combined with rose water and lime juice). There's even a delivery service, for those unable to dine in.

Anar Persian Kitchen says
Anar Persian Kitchen is an idyllic place to enjoy authentic Persian cuisine. Located in the bustling, quirky setting of Portobello Road, which is very much reminiscent of Persian bazars and antique shops.

At the heart of its ethos lies the fruit that the restaurant is named after, namely anar (pomegranate). With a multitude of health benefits, it is the inspiration that healthy food and good taste are not contradictory terms.

The pride of every Persian chef is the grill. Most succulent tender lamb fillets, poussin on the bone or whole fish, all marinated to enhance the flavour and retain their own juices, and grilled on the charcoal grill.

A whole range of Persian stews, lamb, chicken and vegetarian are all cooked slowly over many hours for the herbs and spices to truly infuse together and create an aromatic and flavoursome experience.

Persian rice is long grain and fluffy. It is cooked in the traditional Persian way where the starch is washed away and prevents the grains from sticking together while being steamed. This results is a very healthy low-cab version of the grain, lightly infused with saffron, it provides the perfect platform to enhance the flavours of the grill and the stews.

Delicious, succulent and healthy, whether you fancy a lunch to keep you going all day or enjoy supreme dinner with friends and loved ones, Anar Persian Kitchen is there to provide immaculate service and a unique experience for your senses.

Perhaps 'A' below was unlucky. We had good food and found the place pleasant and relaxing.

I live about five minutes from the restaurant and just love this little place! It feels like stepping into someone's living room and the food, classical music and staff are amazing. No idea why Timeout gave this 3* only.
