The traditional and the contemporary combine to fine effect at this newbie Brixton tapas joint. Near the entrance is a stylish bar lined with aluminium stools, where little globe spotlights hang low over the counter, and vases of lilies and gigantic Rioja bottles decorate the surfaces. The small rear dining room comes complete with a skylight.
The menu offers modern twists on tapas such as enjoyably slimy aubergine cannelloni, and a parsnip crisp-topped roast pork dish rendered stunningly refreshing by a little ball of lemon sorbet melting into a pool of apple sauce. The ‘tradicionales’ selection was less impressive, including a dry, bland tortilla, plus ham and cheese croquetas that consisted of a dribble of liquid sitting at the bottom of a virtually empty breadcrumb shell.
Our Sunday visit saw the service quite distracted, with the sole waiter leaving the dining room for up to 30 minutes at a time. However, there’s no faulting the ingredient quality: a fried portion of cod in sweet tomato sauce flaked apart tenderly; and the delicious, deep flavour of a complimentary starter of rosemary-scattered olives set a high standard that was continued throughout much of the meal.
