Ideal for a post-prandial stroll on Parliament Hill Fields, this gastropub is at times a victim of its own success: at busy times, you may find your hunger being whetted to a keen edge. Which is no bad thing, as the cooking is pretty special, after all – a seasonal menu of well-reared ingredients combined in ways that hark to the past yet seem thoroughly modern. Lamb ploughman’s comes with an anchovy beignet and bleu d’auvergne cheese; a flaky-topped pie is made with ox cheek accompanied by roast bone marrow.
You’ll find around six bottles under £20 on the wine list, plus bin end deals, but the Bull & Last is serious about its ales, including Black Sheep, Doom Bar and Mad Goose. Finish with a superb
own-made ice-cream.
