First opened in 2008, Cattle Grid had a much-needed refurbishment in February 2014. The new look is prettier and more modern, but it’s still a small restaurant set on two floors facing Balham rail station.

Cattle Grid predates the barbecue and burger craze of recent years, and when compared to the very latest trend-setters, its food offer can seem a little staid. But our welsh rarebit and bacon burger was decent even though the meat was slightly too well done, and the half rack of ribs were nicely glazed, though we could scarcely detect the promised peri peri sauce. Our main criticism was that the chips were undercooked and limp; engaging service helped buck up what might otherwise have been an underwhelming experience.

There are now branches in Battersea, Kingston and Windsor. Their nearby chicken rotisserie branch, Poulet Rouge, closed one year after opening (in 2015).

T-A-S-T-Y! It absolutely deserves those capital letters. Situated right next to the station it is very easy to get to/find if you are not that knowledgeable of the area. The burgers and ribs are incredible and reasonably priced. They have a good range of sides and the service is always pretty quick. Also, as I mentioned it's damn tasty! That's all you really need to know.

Although I'm writing at 9 in the morning, if I was offered a plate of their (why are they not world famous?!) chicken wings, I so would have a scoff!

Honestly the food here is always spot on with a good old fashioned welcome to match. I like to go on the all you can eat ribs and wings special on Monday nights. Well worth it. The ribs are succulent and smoky, the wings are in the most unique spicy sauce , buttery and tangy.

I highly recommend this restaurant!

I've visited around 6 times over the last year. The ribs are their speciality and are very tasty, not sure about the "onion rings" or wherever they call them but everything else has been excellent. I love going there for Balham Brunch at the weekend, which is steak & eggs or gammon & eggs, both of which are just what you need to feel human again after a big night out!

Anyone who goes to Cattle Grid and doesn't get the ribs is an idiot, this is clearly there speciality. If you want a steak go to Gaucho or Hawksmoor. The ribs are so tender they fall of the bone and are almost pure meat (rather than the horrible stringy fatty things you get at Bodeans). Get the ribs, you won't regret it.

2 stars? Seriously? The best burgers and ribs outside of the US (have you been to the ever declining Bodean's recently?) and definitely the best chips I have had in London - home made, crispy perfection - that might not sound like much, but I'd travel a long way to eat chips this good. Also experienced Wagyu beef here, which is like beef sex. Finally - I went to Gaucho recently in Canary Wharf where I was ripped off by staff who were like less likeable characters from "Made in Chelsea', serving steaks only just better than you'd find in an Aberdeen Angus Steak House. Steak, ribs or burgers in London - I have to say, I'd always choose Cattle Grid
