[P.S. IGNORE all reviews here prior to July 2013 - they were for the FORMER Japanese restaurant on this site.] Having lived in Japan for several years, we've been waiting over a decade for a decent Japanese restaurant to come to Putney and at last it has. Although we saw great reviews in the past, we were unimpressed with our sole experience of Chosan (the shabby former Japanese restaurant on this site, whose chef, we learn, has retired) but this replacement is great. It used to be in central London with generally good reviews for the food but apparently sometimes let down by poor service. The Putney restaurant had been closed for several months over the summer for refurbishment. Now it has a clean, plain look. A large area at the front is empty except for a service counter and stairs. Going through this to the main ground floor room, there are half dozen tables and an L-shaped counter with seating for about 10 (and the sushi-chef standing behind it, as usual). There are probably more tables downstairs (we haven't looked yet). There is a semi-open kitchen at the far end where you can just glimpse the head of the other chef bobbing about. Although the restaurant has only been open a few weeks, the ground floor tables were all occupied during the course of our lunch, with a mix of Japanese and Foreigners. The staff (chefs and front of house) are Japanese or part-Japanese and everything on the several menus (specials of the day, set lunches and a la carte) is authentically Japanese, free of any Korean flavours (no kimchee!). Service was good. We had two set lunches, one chicken and the other prawn tempura, and enjoyed everything. The miso soup was reasonably good and not too salty, the pickles were genuine Japanese pickles, the other "small dish" was also genuinely Japanese (in Japanese restaurants run by Koreans these tend to reflect Korean-influences) and the rice was good quality. The main dish was excellent in both cases, with the tempura and its dip in particular everything it should be. Only the ice creams were a disappointment, especially the green tea ice cream which tasted as if it had been made with powdered milk. This is a local and solidly Japanese restaurant of the kind we've been dreaming of, free of foreign influences. Hurrah! We look forward to visiting regularly.

This place was recently taken over by the people that ran Tomo-e in Marylebone. Having spent nearly a year of my life in Japan, and as an absolute lover of Japanese cuisine, I am pleased to say that they continue to serve the most authentic Japanese food I've found in London. The restaurant has a comfortable izakaya style atmosphere. The menu is varied and everything I've had was quite good. For those missing a taste of Japan, it's worth making the trip to Putney. Nice sake and shochu selection as well!

What a lovely restaurant truly hidden ! Fantastic authentic Japanese food. The service was great and the food was very fresh. Definitely will be returning again. We felt like we were back in Japan, lots of wonder pictures felt like we were eating at home as there is such a warm atmosphere.

We sat down for more than 40 mins and no one took our orders so we decided to leave. We complaint to the Japanese boss but she was not apologetic at all. Such bad service is unacceptable and hardly Japanese-like! Thank you Chosan for spoiling our friday dinner. VERY DISAPPOINTED!

This is an absolute hidden gem. Should be better known but isn't because of down home, non flash, approach. It you have access to Putney and are interested in Japanese food you should try this place.

A rare homely atmosphere - comfortable and cosy with lovely fresh tasting food. Kids also happy with the choice. Good value portions and set meals too ... sashimi/sushi very very tasty.

Lovely food. Lovely people. I spent 10 yrs in Japan & this is as authentic as it gets. Believe me ,you will go back once you've tried!!!

Fabulous taste of home-style Japanese food. Love their Yakiniku-jyu and their horenso goma. It gets busy on Friday/Saturday, so book ahead.
