I went here last night and had a fabulous meal. I had been scouring the internet for good restaurants in the area and kept seeing complaints about other places for the bad service. I cannot praise the service here enough - they were excellent and attentive but didn't bother us when we were clearly in conversation. The food was delicious, very fresh and full of flavour and the wine selection was also good. I will definitely come back to this lovely little restaurant. It is full of charm and a world away from many of the horrible chain Italian restaurants you get. A real gem.

Da Paolo has occupied the same space in Fitzrovia since 1990. This is a true neighbourhood restaurant, set in a pedestrian-only street which provides a quiet break from bustling Charlotte Street and Tottenham Court Road. The interior is old-fashioned and atmospheric, with antique furnishings and walls lined with pictures. But when the weather is fine there is also the option of dining al fresco on the pavement – with no exhaust fumes to get in the way of your meal.
The menu ranges widely throughout Italy’s varied regional cuisines, concentrating on classicism and tradition. Cherished ingredients such as buffalo mozzarella and culatello di Zibello (one of Parma’s greatest salumi) are showcased in the list of starters, while the 18 pasta dishes feature shellfish heavily. A dozen meat and poultry dishes also emphasise simplicity, with the grill playing a prominent role, but there are also veal escallops in various guises, including the classic scaloppa Milanese and saltimbocca alla Romana.
Fish too is mostly treated simply: a mixed grill of fish served for two, or grilled sea bass with lemon, herbs and fennel. Vegetarians are well catered for at every course, and there’s a two-course set menu available at both lunch (£19.95) and dinner (£24.95). The wine list is mostly Italian and covers a wide geographical range with both famous and lesser-known names at prices that start under £20.
