This café, open daytimes through evenings, is decked out in a girly nostalgia chic with retro furniture that’s for sale. Crooners are on the jukebox, the waitress looks as if she’s on her way to a Lindy Hop, customers play Scrabble.
The café menu’s simple, and limited: a slice of quiche with salad, sandwiches, large scotch eggs. The quiche was flabby, the salad an odd mix of ingredients that didn’t quite work. More effort is made with the cakes: walnut and cranberry, orange and almond, and a score of other confections displayed on the counter. The selection of teas is excellent, presented in pretty teacups.
In the evenings the naughty alcoholic drinks come into their own – the ‘Ginger Rodgers’ (sic) is made with rum, raspberry purée, lime and lashings of ginger beer. There are many events held here, either crafts oriented or just plain silly, such as ‘dot to dot disco’. From a purely culinary perspective Drink Shop & Do may be a triumph of style over substance, but ah, what style.
