The bistro vibe of this simply furnished Muswell Hill institution with next-door deli-traiteur nods to its role as a restaurant open three nights a week (with live jazz on Fridays). As a café, it stands well back from the cutting edge. Most customers visit for its comfortable familiarity and full English breakfasts; on any weekday you’ll see a wide cross-section of the local community, from suited gents to pram-pushers, in attendance. Warm chicken and chorizo salad with baby potatoes, green beans and olives was the menu’s most creative option and, despite its excessive oiliness, was a punchy, satisfying combination. Penne with tomato sauce was workaday, as was the coffee. It’s nice to see such a wide choice of breakfast dishes offered throughout the day – maybe that’s why the cake selection is so limited. Service was no-nonsense and rather unsmiling on our visit, but this didn’t seem to perturb Feast’s many happy customers.
