Homely charm and attentive service are the order of the day at this small Battersea eaterie. Basic furnishings include cream walls, plaid-upholstered benches and trimmings that range from a cubby-hole filled with a curious assortment of bric-a-brac (Glenmorangie ‘golf gift set’, gaudy wooden parrots, pan pipes) to a wall decorated entirely with display packets of breakfast cereals, jars of conserve and teas.
What makes the atmosphere distinctive, though, are nice touches such as pre-chilled glasses and an endearingly plain-spoken host who wishes punters ‘buen provecho’ in between cheeky admonishments like ‘These olives have stones in: don’t break your teeth and blame me.’ A curious menu mixes food from Britain, Indonesia, Morocco and Italy, with dishes including grilled halloumi in a fragrant, freshly blitzed green tomatillo sauce, and a rich spinach tagliatelle.
However, the relaxed, down-to-earth vibe and a £5-£7 breakfast menu of croissants, omelettes and fry-ups suggest Galapagos is at its best as somewhere to start the day.

Last week in the middle of Battersea we had the most gorgeous meal. The restaurant was almost empty but thats not why we were treated so well. Its the third time I have been there and each time it has been completely fabulous. This time, I had the most amazing Burmese soup and my friend had pretty delicious dumplings. Then instead of a glass of wine, Elaine, the sweetest proprietress who never stops smiling gave us 5, yes 5 wines to taste, and we ended up drinking 2 glasses of different wine. Main courses were lovely (Moussaka and a vegetarian aubergine dish) and the the salad accompanying them was simply delicious. My friend's creme caramel was nice but my blueberry cheesecake was to die for. Lovely coffee to end with. You would have paid twice the price for a meal of this quality in the west end. Battersea, you have treat on your doorstep! Step on out to this gem!
This place is a real treasure and its owners could not do more for their guests. The food is absolutely gorgeous and there are always special dishes on the go. Fabulous atmosphere without any pretence. I have been a few times now and have always been so pleasantly surprised by the very best the owners keep on giving. This is so rare. Without doubt, one of my favourite places to go!
Went for an early evening meal. Was a little concerned because the place was empty (filled up later), but the exceptionally friendly owner immediately made me feel at home. I'm a critical type and can honestly say it was the best meal I've had in a long time. Price and smiling service were a bonus.
There are lots of restaurants in London that look great but don't have great food. This is one of the rare examples of the opposite. It's very unprepossessing exterior belies excellent food at very reasonable prices. Definitely recommended (though not one to take your high maintenance girlfriend to)..
This is our local which we are very happy about. Elaine and Steve are the nicest people who serve consistently brilliant food at a very reasonable price. It"s outstanding!
I love this little place, run by very friendly people, the daily specials are always great and they sell the best breakfast around, home made hash browns rock ! Try it
