This mini-chain specialising in authentic German sausages certainly boasts a pretty good reputation - we gave the Soho branch a glowing review, and all three venues, including this Villiers Street branch, are usually pretty busy.

Most people are heading down for the wurst, brought in from the Black Forest where they're made by a butcher called Fritz - it could hardly get more German. There are three types available: a bockwurst (a smoked pork sausage), a bratwurst (a minced pork and veal combo) and a chilli beef sausage, made with pork, beef and a hit of chilli. 

You can order them in a roll or with a salad, and you can jazz them up with things like mustard, jalapenos, crispy onions, sauerkraut, cheese and curry sauce. Schnitzels, veggie options and sides of fries, potato salad and coleslaw also feature.

Born out of a love of our traditional German dish, Herman ze German first came to life upon realising there was a distinct lack of our beloved sausage here in the UK. Having grown up in the Black Forest with an abundance of great wurst, we began importing homemade sausages from our trusted family butcher to sell in our local pub in Brighton. Fast-forward five years - and after countless festivals, events, a comedy takeover staring funny-man Alan Carr and ze World Cup victory - we now share our passions with three permanent homes in London.

Our third addition to the family, at Charlotte Street, Fitzrovia, is the largest of the trio with raw concrete walls and brass mincers adorning our signature neon sign 'Our wurst is ze best!'.

Ze menu continues to bring delicious and authentic sausages to hungry Londoners. Our gluten and lactose-free bratwurst, chilli beef and bockwurst is sourced exclusively from our family butcher, grilled to perfection and served with toppings of choice (including sauerkraut and onions) and a delicious salad or chips. Exclusive to Fitzrovia are ze best schnitzel you will ever taste!

Bier lovers are welcomed to Ze Basement Bar with a fine selection of the best quality German beers including our very own 'Herman's Market Brew' from our hometown, served exclusively at the Fitzrovia venue. Plus there's a bottled bier selection with a seasonal and rare rotational menu.

We know that whenever you see a Herman, you know it's a proper German. Let's fetz!

This place does a good sausage! It provided me with some much needed sustenance last night after a few too many vinos. A bockwurst with all the trimmings is a winner (especially the crispy onions). Only downside was the chips, rather dry and reminiscent McCain's oven chips.

Good cuisine to be found here. The food is without doubt amazing although there's a slightly limited selection of alcoholic beverages available. All said though this is a great place to visit for a lunch or dinner, and the staff are very friendly too


I was looking for proper German sausages to eat not only in Christmas and then I luckily discovered Herman Ze German while walking in Embankment one day. These guys make very delicious, gluten-free sausages in 4 different types. I either go for bockwurst (smoky pork) or currywurst but they also have bratwurst (pork and veal), chilli beef (beef and pork), and leberkase (oven baked pork). You can have the sausages on their own, in a freshly baked roll or with healthier chips with no extra fat. Try also the yummy crispy onions! Besides, staff is friendly, prices come reasonable, you can even grab a loyalty card and have your tenth sausage for free as I did recently! It’s open everyday till late as an alternative to bad quality fast food such as the odd kebab van you have to rely on after binge drinking on Saturday nights.
