Bright and modern, with striking yellow walls and big red hanging lampshades, Hiba is a Holborn lunchtime favourite, doing a brisk trade in meze dishes, wraps and freshly squeezed juices. It’s popular and relaxed in the evening too (although there’s no alcohol), despite the regular rumbles from the Piccadilly Line below.
The menu contains a varied selection of Lebanese standards, with grills as well as mezes. From the meze list, we tried a lemony batinjan el-rahib; a crisp fattoush salad with crunchy toasted pitta squares, warmed by signature sumac spice; and a classic fuul medames – warm, homely and comforting, with lashings of olive oil to mix in with the beans. Lentil soup was a sound rendition too.
To follow, a main course of king prawns was served with flavoursome Lebanese rice (cooked with oil and vermicelli), but the shellfish were distinctly average, and the accompanying tahini made an odd companion. Stick to the classics, though, and you can enjoy some great Lebanese food at prices far lower than in the flashy places of Edgware Road.
