Tricia de Courcy Ling

Previously renowned as a genuine local that belied its salubrious surroundings, this corner pub is under new ownership. It’s had a serious spruce-up, and now, perhaps, feels more at home on its road of pastel-coloured cottages and Victorian townhouses.

The interior is a touch cold, but they’ve done a good job with a fairly sizeable space, retaining the finer features (dimpled glass windows, a U-shaped mahogany bar) while adding other decorative touches (big rugs, antlers adorned with fedoras and scarves, candlelit tables unencumbered by tablecloths, Punch magazine wallpaper in a separate snug).

The choice of cask ales includes Sharp’s Doom Bar and Sambrook’s Wandle; the French-leaning wine list has five reds and whites by the glass; and the food doesn’t venture too far away from top-end gastropub territory.

Awful service and attitude. We went to the Hillgate for drinks and dinner last night and were really unimpressed with the service.

We ordered two medium rare steaks, they came out far from medium rare, told the waitress she agreed, then came back with them saying she'd been told they were medium rare. The manager came over, very rudely said that they were medium rare, I pointed out that they weren't as they were barely even pink, I asked if that was medium rare then what was medium and what was well done. He sarcastically said "what do you want me to do describe it, well it would be more cooked"

They didn't want to do us any more food so instead bought the money back put it on the table and walked off without a word. Haven't had such bad service in a long time. It was late and we had to go and find somewhere else for dinner.
