Le Chardon are a duo of south London restaurants (one in Dulwich, one in Clapham) that focus on classic French cuisine at reasonable prices. A neighbourhood restaurant with a smart décor, you can expect classic French dishes like moules mariniere, bouillabaisse, coq au vin, escargots and foie gras.

Le Chardon has been a longstanding favourite of mine for years, always being my first choice for birthdays and celebrations. However, upon my most recent visit (2nd May 2016) I was horrified at what I found.
It began with over an hours wait for our starters, which were all cold dishes so there was no explanation for slow service. We shared a Fruits de Mer platter, which I cannot fault.
During the time between our starter and main, another hour, I ventured to the toilets where I found a cockroach crawling around my feet!! I alerted the maître d' who said she was sorry but did not seem at all shocked.
When my main finally arrived I was left open mouthed as I was presented with half a plate of brown edged lettuce, a minuscule piece of steak, cooked to death and tough and a few chips, clearly from the freezer.
We spoke to the maître d' and informed her that we were not going to eat or pay for our mains. She did not argue with this at all, simply shrugging her shoulders. We also mentioned the cockroach as we were leaving and she said " all restaurants in London have cockroaches, it is normal."
Very sad to have lost a great local restaurant!
Unlike the users review below that don't leave review when they have a nice time, I will! Used a deal from Time Out, sat outside, customer service is fine, and food is great, all in all recommended! I had the pan fried King Prawns, and my partner the platter of seafood, whilst drinking champagne! What could be better than that?
I have eaten at this restaurant a number of times in the last three years, both at lunch and in the evenings. On every occasion the French bistro style menu has been excellent and the choice great. The food served has been consistently good on all occasions over the years and service usually decent.
I am however sad to report that I will never be dining at Le Chardon again after my experience last Saturday. A regular user of GroupOn, I bought a voucher for Le Chardon giving me money off the final bill. What I didn't buy however was to be argued with at the end of my meal by an overly officious and aggressive restaurant manager. From nowhere my boyfriend and I were accused incorrectly of ignoring the Ts&Cs of the voucher and when we tried to explain the situation we were argued with further and continuously talked over. Despite sepaking clamly and quietly the manager responded to us with a raised voice more than once. Quite an amazing experience to have the proprietor of a restaurant talk to you like you'd just stolen from them and refuse to back down or apologise even when confronted with Ts&Cs of a voucher. Needless to say it ruined what was a lovely evening and I urge anyone planning a relaxing dinner to avoid this place like the plague.
As the old saying goes.....The customer is always right, except when you're the Manager of Le Chardon.....
Worst restaurant ever. Had to leave mid meal on account of the rude server. Very unhelful if accompanied by children and bordering on racist. Never going back.
