On a prime spot at the fashionable end of Clapham Common, Madeleine (formerly called Macaron from 2006-2014) is one of several cafés with a handful of outside tables serving the constant traffic of Commoners heading from Clapham Old Town to the tube. It’s also the best of the bunch, not just because it looks so recognisably French, but also because all the baked goods are made in the in-house bakery.
Help-yourself viennoiseries are displayed at the entrance; the croissants and pains aux chocolat are highlights. Rustic breads are displayed on countertops, while excellent French pâtisserie, from citron tarts to vibrantly coloured macaroons, are kept behind glass.
Savoury snacks – such as filled baguettes, croque-monsieurs, quiches – are the preferred choice of those eating in.
The interior and exterior have also had much tinkering over 2013/2014 in an attempt to improve the slightly awkward layout and look (with only mixed success). An experiment with a buffet menu in the evening was promised, but also never took off.

The food is great! Very nice French local patisserie, the refurbishment has improved the seating area greatly and staff are better and more attentive..
I've been going to Madeleine and the former Macaron for a few years. The coffee has improved, the croque Monsieur are very good but the consistent highlight here is the pastries. You couldn't get closer to a Parisien boulangerie in terms of taste and look (and weight!) of the croissants, pain au choc and pain au raisin. It's about a ten minute walk from my home but we'll often head here at a weekend to pick up some of the pastries for breakfast. They have also started doing evening meals with BYO and have recently increased the number of nights these are offered so presumably they have been a success.
This used to be the best patisserie ever with the most amazing fresh macaroons. It was also really beautiful inside. It's all gone downhill since they started messing around with the interior. The macaroons have shrunk and don't taste as fresh and getting served is a hit and miss affair.
I was a frequent and content customer here, however since the installation of the communal table which greatly reduces the number of good seats that overlook the Common, and the silly placement of the croissant bar which further eliminates good seating, I have found myself less than inclined to go here. Added to the very poor layout is the lack of a bathroom, increasingly lax staff and varying coffee sizes and strengths for the same style of coffee (I've never had two americanos that were the same). The last straw for me was going there looking forward to my Sunday morning coffee only to be told that there was no coffee because their grinder was broken. Sorry to be so harsh, Mac. but with a bit more common sense this place could be great. You have a wonderful space and great location. Everything else needs work ... and quick.
I'm sorry but I've now been to this cafe twice and have encountered problems both times. On this visit we sat for 45 minutes waiting for food because the waiting staff forgot about it. The food when it arrived, however, was lovely so despite this we decided to give it another chance. Sadly the food this time was absolutely terrible and frankly, I could have made a better version of what I was served myself at home. The serving staff also forgot an order yet again and we had to reorder after 30 minutes. This time there will be no furthers chances and this cafe is now sadly off the list. We will not be going back.
Authentic french bakery and patisserie! Bread is not the quality you would expect from a french bakery but I'm picky on this anyway. Cakes are simply great and always fresh. Macarons are simply the best in london to me, far from the places charging you for their name rather than the quality of the cakes they server. Don't understand how you can be disappointed for such cheap and tasty cakes!
food not good at all. and waiter staff not professional good thea but coffee bad only the macaron are great
