One of the first curry houses to open on Brick Lane back in 1979, Nazrul originally launched to serve the local Bangladeshi community but has since gone on to cater for everyone, since Indian cuisine boomed in the UK. Split across two floors, it can accommodate large groups if booked in advance and is open seven days a week.

My friend booked Aladin for her birthday dinner. When we arrived, we were told they’re full and put us in Nazrul. The staff was very patient with us when we were waiting for almost an hour for the late comers. We could bring our own bottles and that was a good start.

The restaurant offers Bengali, Indian and Bangladeshi cuisines, so you will find the usual suspects like tondoori, balti and curry dishes in all possible combinations: with veggies, fish, and meats. Many dishes are available as sides and main, so you can try a few.

We started with papadoms with 4 different chutneys, but it was hard to guess what they were made of. My favourite one was the red one that looked like a jam, but was actually more savoury and spicy.

My Pasanda - a pale creamy curry made with almonds - was sweet and rich, but indistinct.

Many of the dishes, especially the sizzling ones served to the nearby table looked and smelled delicious. But I’m surprised to see only 5 star reviews of this place as I don’t feel it stands out of the rest of Brick Lane curry houses. We had a pleasant night until the waiter told us to vacate the table and leave. They didn’t notify us about time limitation at the beginning.

They also forgot to apply the 20% discount which they offer when you book in advance.
