This family-run joint is a surprisingly impressive local gem, given its incongruous location across from a particularly grey, brutalist Bethnal Green estate. The simple, unpretentious space is made welcoming by the genial owner, who runs the place with his sons and creates the kind of warm atmosphere that attracts return customers.
The menu is equally thoughtful, offering such hearty treats as smoked sprats with lemon mayonnaise alongside adeptly executed crowd-pleasers such as steak with chunky chips and fresh chimichurri sauce. The veggie staple of falafel was a commendable version, the patties moist, pleasantly spiced and served with butternut purée and a sweet and salty beetroot and feta salad. Other popular dishes on the night included lamb burger with tsatsiki, and duck breast with orange gnocchi.
Do leave room for dessert. A pair of stupendous sorbets married the classic cocktail ingredients of peach with prosecco, and cherry with bourbon, to delectable effect. The standard of cooking is made even better value by the bountiful servings, making this an exemplary local that deserves to do well.
