There’s much to cherish about this gastropub tucked among the cute backstreet cottages on the border between Barnes and East Sheen. A handsome space by day, with cream wood panelling and retro metal signs, it positively twinkles by night thanks to the warm wooden furniture, polished red ceiling and copper globe lamps above the central bar. The bar divides the smallish space into drinking and dining areas, and there’s also a back courtyard for summer lounging. Prices and clientele are upmarket, but not stuffy, and the food can be very good. Classy ingredients are used in unfussy combinations, whether it’s top-notch seafood (dressed Cromer crab or Colchester rock oysters to start, beautifully cooked lemon sole with brown shrimp and parsley beurre noisette to follow), a lavish Sunday roast (Longhorn ribeye or whole poussin with all the trimmings), or comforting puds (rice pudding with damson jam, egg custard tart with raspberries). Attention is paid to seasonality, witness a whole baked vacherin mont d’or as a starter to share. Kids get mini portions of adult dishes. French bottles dominate the wine list, and there’s Hepworth Sussex, Bitter and a seasonal guest ale on tap. Dogs (of any colour) are welcome.

£17.50 for a roast was a total shocker. The food tasted "nice" but I can get nice for a tenner. The portion sizes were small-1 oversized roast potato....a couple of sad carrots and a chargrilled bit of cabbage....and to top it all the whole thing was only lukewarm
We travelled a long way to get to this gastropub and now wish we hadn't bothered.
Went tonight for dinner. We were greeted by a track suit top wearing waitress who didn't smile once. She spent a great deal of time texting at the bar. A cold night so ordered the carrot soup - this turned up pipping hot but without any flavour plus our waitress's frown.
For mains we chose the fish stew...this arrived again with the frown but also a few mussels ,half a carrot and some raw salmon - what happened to the stew? At this point we left .What a shame such a great pub but AWFUL service and really poor food.
Superb! One of the rest pubs / restaurants I have been too. Excellent food, great atmosphere and really friendly staff. Would recommend it to anybody and given the amount of times I have been I have never had a problem.
Have been here a handful of times, thought we had found a gem. but recently it feels as if the place has lost something! sadly the quality of the food has gone down hill all the way to the bottom compared to what it used to be.
Very disapponted. Just like another reviewer, we went for Sunday lunch, waited an hour for our main course which was mediocre. When the plates were finally cleared we were not asked if we had enjoyed our meal or if we would like to see a dessert menu or order coffee. Given the prices, eg £16 for a main course, we were not impressed. So we paid up and left and will not be returning.
not what it used to be. alot better places to go in the area
Rather a dull little place. Food mediocre. Inoffensive but uninteresting. Its gastronomic near neighbours, the tiny and completely enchanting Idle Hour, funky Treehouse and cosy Annie's all score very much higher on ambience and quality of food.
Disappointed , booked Sunday lunch as a birthday celebration. Waited over one hour for main course, the meat roasts where not cooked as requesed t and had to be returned . Then we waited for over 25 minutes for desserts, left in the end without dessert. Staff apologised (sort of ) , they said it was because everyone ordered the same thing at the same time ! Only three choices on the menu and pub half empty . Will not be returning , celebration ruined..
