London's best review, food and drink news
This new addition to the eating options along south Hackneys Lauriston Road (run by the landlords of the Approach Tavern in Bethnal Green) is a poshed-up chippie, housed in an airy room thats handsomely tiled in white and black, and filled with neat little tables, chairs and benches. Assuming you dont order from the specials board, from which we enjoyed chunky, buttery prawns as a shared starter, your main decision will be which fish to have with your chips and mushy peas. While generous, a portion of rock was a little too greasy. But the haddock was perfect: crisp, golden batter cloaking a melt-in-the-mouth tender fillet. The chips were very fine too, fluffy within but firmer on the outside. Dont be surprised if youve got no room for dessert: if you do, gelati was supplemented on our visit by Eaton (sic) mess. You can also order from a slightly cheaper takeaway counter an appealing picnic option since Victoria Park is a pickled onions throw from the front door.
