  • WINNER - BEST TEA ROOM

Time Out Eating & Drinking awards 2008

  • A riverside gem favoured by young families as well as tea experts, the Orange Pekoe tea room enjoys a broad following. Fans are attracted by its villagey charm, homely cooking and fabulous teas. It’s a cosy, welcoming place with a food counter at the front leading to rustic-style tables towards the back. Wild flowers in alcoves, teatime trinkets and blackboard menus add to the homespun appeal. At the entrance, rows of black tea caddies are filled with around 50 special varieties. The house blend is especially invigorating – a carefully honed mix of darjeeling tea, underpinned by the rounded character of ceylon. Just as outstanding, silver-tipped jasmine deserves accolades for its deep, mellow, sweet fragrance. Knowledgeable, on-the-ball staff are happy to suggest and advise. Although we’re tempted by the big, beautiful cakes, hearty sandwiches and cold lunch platters, it’s the cream teas and pots of tea that keep us coming back. On sunny days, bag a table outside for a languorous afternoon clinking china and savouring the brew.

I had what can only be described as the worst possible customer experience in a long time. I was rudely stopped by a member of staff while looking to find an empty table to sit with my family. We then had a number of moody members of staff harass us throughout our stay, making us feel unwelcome. We were frequently interrupted in order to ask if we wanted to order food (coffee or tea just isn't enough), if we had finished (coffee cups removed) and if we want the bill (as they had other people that they wanted to move into our seats...I will NOT be going back to this place. A pity as the coffee was good.

That was the very first and last time that I will visit this place. We were 'welcomed' by a woman that, basically, rudely stopped us from sitting in one of the few free tables to, actually, give her permission before we could do that. Then, we were served by another rude member of the staff that before we had actually finished our coffees she scooped them from our table. As a cherry on the cake, we were forced to leave (as other people here have indicated too) so as to accommodate a new group that had just arrived. I share the thoughts of most of the people here that this is an extremely unwelcoming place and, ironically enough, miles away from the hospitality the Greeks (as the owners) are famous for. This was by any means the most disturbing experience I 've ever had in a cafe.

Whata great place - don't understand the negatives - it is busy and rightly so - great tea, coffee, food, service and staff. Now if only they had something to slow time while I am there.

Orange Pekoe is a wonderful place for an afternoon tea. The staff was very friendly and attentive and the cream tea was a real treat, freshly made and absolutely gorgeous.

Orange Pekoe is an extremely special little place, where the owners and the staff pay meticulous attention to every detail. The tea is wonderful and the cappuccino truuuuly delicious, unbeatable. The decoration is spot on; elegant, subtle and very homely. The staff are friendly, relaxed and personal even when the place is teeming. I couldn't recommend it more.

This is an amazing little place. The staff are cheerful and friendly, food is delicious, cream teas are an absolute treat! It's always spotlessly clean, and full of character and charm. Since our first visit we've been completely hooked!

Whilst I think the decor is lovely, the tearoom has been a victim of it's own success. It does get very crowded now. I was a regular at one time, but found the lady who owns the tea room can be somewhat rude and the last time I went, my husband and I were asked to move (mid-tea and scones) to accomodate another group of people who had just arrived. Not very special, and given the tea is rather pricey we felt somewhat annoyed. Service needs to improve.

The glorious review I read in Time Out and the fact, that I love a good cream tea, made me visit this tea room with a few friends who were equally keen to visit this wonderful place you were raving about. What a disappointment: One particular member of staff was extremely unfriendly and unwelcoming, the selection of cakes was poor, the decor cold and uninspiring, the service was slow and forgetful...what a shame as it would not take much to make this place really nice. But if this is the best tea room London has to offer: Poor old London - you should be able to do better than this.

I was so disappointed by Orange Pekoe. Being a huge fan of tea rooms, I made a special journey here after reading all the rave reviews. The service was terrible- I had to keep going up and down to the counter to get served and we were not even given a list of all the different teas available. We were seated in a corner with a table not even big enough to fit the tea pot and scones. Tea is about relaxation but the whole experience was stressful and genuinely not worth it. A real shame- I would never go back. 4/10
