London's best review, food and drink news
Branches of GBK continue to open across London: there are now 19, one of which, sadly, has taken over the former premises of classic Cockney pie and mash shop Goddards in Greenwich. Still, thats not GBKs fault; for our money, this outfit can do little wrong. It all began on Northcote Road, and that first small restaurant still has crowds queuing out the door at weekends, for massive portions of interesting, well-cooked burgers. There are classic varieties alongside some that stay just the right side of novelty: like the Jamaican with mango and ginger sauce. Started by Kiwis, GBK is now owned by the Clapham House chain; the cheerily Antipodean atmosphere is retained, partly accounting for the friendlier-than-usual service and the braver selections on the menu (produced with the help of noted NZ chef Peter Gordon). Excellent.
