There’s an inventive international flavour to the food here, with imaginative greek, thai and jamaican burgers joining their beetrooted kiwi cousin at this well-established New Zealand-inspired chain. The burgers are picture-perfect, housed in freshly baked sesame-seed sourdough buns with acres of lush lettuce and aged cheddar cheese melting alluringly down the sides. The robust Aberdeen Angus beef patties certainly put Burger King’s efforts at similarly sourced meat into perspective (even the kids’ burgers seem bigger than the BK Angus burgers, and are crisply chargrilled). There are new organic products too, such as wild boar burgers, albeit at a pricey £8.95 without chips. Vegetarians are kept happy with a spicy puy lentil burger augmenting the ‘big mushroom’. However, over-eagerness with those cosmopolitan relishes (on our visit, customers were pulling their burgers apart and rebuilding), cramped seating and a long wait for tables will have to be addressed if the Gourmet Burger Kitchen is to stay pre-eminent.

Hmmm. I find this whole writing about myself pretty difficult. I think one of the most attractive qualities in a person is modesty but I guess that...

My girlfriend and I decided to take the plunge and try out the Canary Wharf gbk in order to see for ourselves what all the fuss was about. Like the previous user, I sincerely wish we hadnt bothered. After several minutes of waiting, someone eventually appeared and showed us to a table. We were told to go a counter towards the rear of the establishment for service. The first person I spoke to at the counter confirmed he was unable to serve us, and did not provide a reason. He suggested I go to one of the other tills instead. The other four people standing behind their tills did not even look up to acknowledge us. None of them were engaged in dealing with other customers so we thought this was exceedingly rude. We waited a couple more minutes to see if one of them would even look up to acknowledge our presence, or even just say they would attend to us in a moment, but absolutely nothing. After a couple more minutes, another customer walked up to the counter and one of the women behind the tills finally looked up and started taking his order. I asked the remaining people behind their tills if one of them could please serve us, and not one of them even looked up from their tills. We walked away in disgust and left the restaurant. Their burgers may indeed be tasty, but their staff are undoubtedly the worst I have ever encountered. I could understand it if they were busy or engaged in serving other customers, but the restaurant was not even remotely approaching half full. Under the circumstances, it isnt hard to see why.
Avoid at all costs.
My wife, son and I went to the Covent Garden gbk on Sat at 13:00 and the service was so poor we nearly starved! Our order had been forgotten and when it finally turned up over 40 mins later the chips were cold! There was no apology from the Manager; we shall not return!
