  • Oxo Tower Restaurant, Bar & Brasserie

  • If you’re tired of the view of London from the eighth floor of Oxo Tower, you’re tired of life, to misquote Samuel Johnson. Excellent use is made of the riverside position and the high ceilings of the two large spaces that make up the restaurant and the bar-brasserie. Floor-to-ceiling windows are artfully angled towards the sky, while the long terrace is the favoured position when the weather allows. It would be a crying shame if the food was a disappointment, but the crew at Harvey Nichols know what they’re doing. A dinner in the brasserie produced a dish that banished thoughts of the rain pounding the windows; octopus was cooked twice to succulence and combined with a Mediterranean assemblage of black olives, feta cheese and oven-dried tomatoes. It was a journey south for the main course, too: rabbit saltimbocca with a slightly underwhelming truffle pecorino polenta. The restaurant offers a little more comfort – tablecloths no less – and space (tables for two can be painfully close in the brasserie), but prices aren’t cheap. Service is well-drilled and surprisingly friendly, given the over-abundance of expense-account diners staff have to deal with.

Amazing staff, wonderful exquisite friendly professional service, even the waiter looking after the arrivals pending seating had us tasting Champaign, wow, the food was simply divine, maximum flavour Michelin star top quality and I haven't even come to the view. To put it mildly I will never forget that date. All in all, stunning venue quite pricey but you do get what you pay for in terms of flavour

The Set Menu at the brasserie was absolutely foul. The pop corn fried chicken starter consisted of a tiny piece of breaded chicken on lollipop stick that looked like a fishfinger on a stick. It reminded me of a meal you could buy at KFC. Disgraceful.
For mains I had Mackerel on a layer of "goat curd" cheese and foccacia (a miniscule slice of toast). It made my belly curdle. I've never eaten out so badly.

Food was good, but way too much greasy pesto in the vegetarian pasta. Tables are ludicrously close together - felt like we were eating in a massively overpriced canteen - and there weren't even any table cloths. The view is good, but since you cannot reserve a particular table in advance the likelihood of getting a table at the window is slim. Our waiter was pretty rude so we refused to pay the 'optional' 12.5% service charge which the restaurant had kindly added on our behalf. We had to explain ourselves to 3 different people to get this removed. Would not bother with again. Try Babylon at The Rooftop Gardens instead.
