Once popular for being rude, Wong Kei now thrives on serving huge portions from a directory-length menu, cheaply, swiftly and efficiently. Even the staff wear Wong Kei T-shirts (£10; red or black). Communal to the point of canteen-like – everyone shares benches and little pots of Chinese tea – Wong Kei is huge, with scores of diners tucking into duck, pork and seafood. Among the ten vegetarian, 25 seafood and countless meat options are some unusual finds: baked crab in its shell with ginger and spring onion; steamed eel with roast pork; and fried intestine with salted veg. Specialities include cold barbecued meat (crispy pork belly, barbecued pork) on hot rice, and rice porridge congees (prawns and assorted meats). Among the drinks are Tsing Tao beer and, rather incongruously, Smirnoff Ice.
