• Sagar

    Budget choice
  • One of the few restaurants in London to serve Udupi vegetarian dishes from Karnataka, Sagar now has three branches stretching from the West End to Twickenham. This original Hammersmith site has smooth blond-wood walls dotted with elegant brass figurines that are beautifully lit at night. The place gets packed during the evenings, and can bustle at lunchtimes too, as students, shoppers, workers and families stop by for a fix of spice, and myriad variations on rice. Puffy, spongy idlis soaked up our freshly made sambar and fiery coconut chutney: a highly satisfying combination. Uthappam was just the right side of searingly hot, and was made livelier still with a topping of fresh tomato. A cooling contrast came from the vegetable kootu (spinach cooked with yoghurt and coconut) – faultlessly done. The dosas are excellent too, with delicately spiced fillings from potato to paneer. A slightly stodgy samosa was the one duff note among our meal’s many highs. What’s more, the prices are pretty much as low as you can get in London for South Indian food of this quality.

Today I went with three other friends to Sagar for the first time. I read about this place online and wanted to try some South Indian Vegetarian food. The Tottemham court road branch was a nice wood interior with good seating. The staff was helpful to give us a hand on what to order. We had this potato puri starters which has yoghurt, tamarid sauce with this crunchy shell at the bottom. Very tasty! We also have this spicy dish with a donut in it. For main we chose Dahl, aubergine, okra and spinach & paneer. I have to say out of the four, the Dahl was the most disappointing, not much taste to it. Avoid at all cost. The best were the Okra dish. Nicely done, great flavour! also the aubergine dish was nicely done too. We ordered Lemon rice and garlic rice to go with our curries. I personally didn't like the lemon rice, just taste a bit different... but the garlic rice was fantastic.
For dessert, we had kofi ice cream, sponge milk pudding, and this dish with vermicelli and saffron in it. I wasn't too fond of the dessert, perhaps personal taste... or I have tasted better Indian desserts too.
So my verdict is definitely try the fantastic array food, ask what the waiter would choose or recommend and take their advice into consideration :)
I would definitely go back to try out different curry dishes and starters that I haven't had in other indian restaurants.
Price wise, we had two entree, 4 main dishes and two rice. No drinks (we all had tap water, which came with lemon in it.) It was around 46 pounds without any service on it.

This is a great place - and the paper-thin dosa is both amazing - and HUGE. super service - a real winner

Good opportunity not to have to choose between chicken, lamb or beef for a change
