Kastner & Ovens
Owners Sue Ovens and Ann-Marie Kastner have created a Covent Garden gem relied on by many working Londoners, who queue every weekday to see what’s on the lunch menu. And, whatever it is, it’s fresh and tasty. A filling lunch will set you back just over a fiver and there’s a good selection: salads might be chickpea and roasted vegetable, pea and feta, or tabouleh; hot mains range from caponata packed with juicy aubergines to beef lasagne or fish pie. The quiches and tartlets are stunning, with fresh and imaginative fillings and perfect crumbly pastry. One counter is packed with tempting cakes, biscuits and treats, such as lemon meringue pie and bakewell tart. Seating is limited (just one round table at the back), so most people take their food away – but don’t be put off by the queue, it moves quickly and it’s worth it.
