Heaven! What a rare treat to go somewhere that gets everything so right, while making it seem so effortless. Nothing here feels laboured, from the cool, minimalistic white furniture (with a simple wire mesh sculpture running the length of the wall) to the stylish but relaxed and friendly staff – and food to die for. At lunchtime, choose from the selection of salads and other main courses, which abound with innovative flavour and texture combinations, and taste stunning. Simpler options might include broccolini with tofu, chilli, sesame oil and soy, or red rice and quinoa with orange zest, caramelised onion, pistachio and rocket. More involved dishes include sesame-crusted seared tuna with a thai fruit salsa, or baked fresh sardines with bulgur, ‘Iranian berries’, pistachio, lemon and pomegranate. Seating is mainly at long, shared tables, but there are some small, solitary tables against the wall if you yearn to be à deux. Ottolenghi doubles as a bakery and deli, so after your savoury courses, swoon over the enticing array of cakes and tarts on the front counter, then rejoice in an outrageously rich chocolate tart or a splendid chocolate meringue, accompanied by a strong, smooth espresso. We’re smitten!
