Can one Thai restaurant be all things to all people? The international chain Blue Elephant is certainly making a valiant attempt. After traipsing over bridges and ducking under hanging vines in the spectacular ‘Disney goes oriental’ jungle of a dining room, diners are offered a variety of enticing options: discounts on days when Chelsea FC has a home game; face-painting for children at Sunday brunch; and a £21 ‘herbal lunch’ for the dieting set. However, the food is hit and miss. Cod stir-fried with chilli paste and herbs was served in a heavy batter that lacked crispness; it had been smothered in a bland sweet-and-sour sauce that was hardly worthy of the ‘three-elephant’ chilli warning stamped on the menu. Exotic fruits for dessert were sadly under-ripe. The Blue Elephant’s theatrical surroundings make it a perennial favourite with moneyed locals, and the friendly staff were engaging on our visit – but the food seemed tired and predictable. We suggest you order carefully to avoid bland dishes.

I believe that Blue elephant is one of the best restaurants I've ever been to, thought you have to realise that its not a cheap restaurant, because of its high standards the prices of food looks so, but it paysback with a good quality. When i read the comments bellow, like from Mrs Wadham, it actualy schocked me that parents can enjoy their meal without looking after their children, obviously they should notice if its not around them anymore, or should even forbid the child to go too far from the table, as well as i think Mrs Wadham was as well too carrying mother as all mothers are, as well as Carly complains about water, well its not a low level restaurant, when you come there you have to have certain budget. As for me i had great experience at the Blue Elephant I ate there the most delicious food as well as tryed a lot of exotic cocktails which were great ! as well as staff were friendly, smiling always and saying sawadde krub to every customer that came in to the restaurant. there is no possibility to not love this restaurant...
A great venue in an unsuspecting area of town, booking for a large party involved some negotiation but the Blue Elephant we’re accommodating. On the night the party were served drinks as they arrived easily and quickly and then taken through to the tables in a back area of the restaurant. The food although not in abundance was good quality and tasty. Waiters constantly kept glasses full and tables clear, courses we’re brought quickly as were drinks
The champagne and Devaux Curvee D Rose was light and fruity, a complex taste with a fruity aroma, leaving you wanting to sip but not to gulp, the wine a 2007 Sancer Domaine D Roger, was again a good medium dry with a fruity crisp taste.
A good venue with OK décor which passed somewhere between garden centre chique with the lights turned low and a genuinely good attempt at jungle in doors without being attacked by a Yucca
Verdict - For a relaxed party or when walking through it appears a good romantic venue for just a couple.
This evening I took four business associates / friends to the Blue Elephant at Fulham Broadway. This is the second time I have been there. The setting is quite impressive - almost to the point of being a gimmick - and makes for a fun evening. However, this is the second time that I experienced the services is out right rude. First we decided to sit in the lounge and have a drink. However, this turned out to be quite a long ordeal as no one came to serve us after we had been seated and assured someone would come. When I finally went to fetch the waitress (who was hanging out at the bar actively ignoring us), she was quite annoyed that I was bothering her (there were only two other customers there at the time, so I figured it was not really putting her out). But, since we had been waiting for 15+ minutes without any attention I did not know what else to do.
Then, at the table it was the same all over. First we sat for near 20 minutes without any sign of attention. Only when I started to get up to find someone did the waitress come by. Except for serving the wrong drinks (we ordered wine by the glass, and they brought out ones that we had not ordered), not offering a single smile throughout the meal, and generally seeming quite bothered by our presence, what annoyed me the most was her refusal to put the net sum of the bill on my card. I must admit I had not intended to leave a tip at all at this point, but if a customer asks, should the waitress not allow him to pay the tip in cash and leave the rest on the card? Well, this waitress told me that there was nothing she could do to help if I wanted to pay by card.
Most importantly, the food was the real kicker. They have quite high prices for Thai, and the quality is sub-par compared to most Thai places in London (with the exception of the presentation - they do make the food look very good before you start eating it).
I am sad to say, this is going to be one of the very few restaurants I have ever vowed never to return to.
I am about to book another evening at the Blue Elephant with a few friends because last time I went it was awesome! I am very surprised to read 'Carly's' review, obviously with a line like "I refuse to eat in London ever again" Londoners will be better off without her!!! The food is excellent, the cocktails outstanding and the atmosphere very very well orchestrated!. It is not the cheapest restaurant in the world but well worth it for a special occasion (It also helps keep certain types away...)
Went here for my birthday dinner last night and completely regret it. Had forgotten reading about the £5 water and got sucked into two. Still cannot believe such a ridiculous price as I usually order water without giving a thought. Obviously they know this. Food tasted fine, though portion sizes are stupidly small for the price...I suppose they cannot be blamed though, London really has no clue when it comes to thai food. After this meal I refuse to eat thai in London ever again.
