Restaurants

  • Kaya

  • Kaya is like a Soho Korean restaurant upgraded for a Mayfair clientele. Waitresses wear graceful embroidered gowns and even the cheapest house white wine is served from an ice bucket. The sleek dining room is a mock-up of a Korean gung(palace), with bottle-green roof tiles, painted beams and a wall of framed Korean objets d’art, including a gorgeous print of a deranged tiger. For an elegant dining experience, book the paper-screen banquet room at the back of the restaurant. The menu has plenty of barbecue and hotpot dishes, but we ordered the bossam – steamed pork, wrapped in cabbage leaves with sweet pickles, raw garlic, chilli and a pungent seafood sauce. It was an interesting combination of flavours but bettered by a dish of sweet-marinated beef ribs barbecued and wrapped in lettuce leaf parcels with ssam jang (fermented bean paste) and tangy shredded spring onion. A 15% service charge is included on the bill, but the attentive staff deserve every penny.

I went to this little restaurant last night. Very quiet for a Thursday but I arrived before 8. I thought the menu selection was a little limited but still enough to keep you contemplating for a while.
The standard kimchi side was a litlte soggy and tasted similar to the supermarket bought Kimchi from any oriental retailer.
I chose Bibimbap as my main as its usually a good dish for me to gauge and I love it. Must confess it was quite standard. although Korean food is usually for sharing I didn't really get the urge to share my tiny portions with my dining parter. The service was very good, However this is not suprising for anything Korean based. All and all I had a nice meal and an expected price for the location. I doubt I'd rush to go there again but it's certainly not on my avoid list.

The food is great, especially if you are wanting something different from your usual Chinese/far eastern food. Ask to try Korean specials and you wont be disappointed. The service was also very good.
