Korean food and romantic dining rarely go hand in hand, so this elegant basement restaurant next to Holborn tube is something to be treasured. The dining room is dark and moody, with glass and stone partitions, and barbecue tables illuminated by small pools of light. One wall is entirely covered by an abstract mural of wooden blocks, giving the place a vaguely Frank Lloyd Wright feel. Service can be a bit touch and go, and you can expect a long wait for a table if you arrive without a reservation, but the menu is extensive and the food excellent. We got a kick from the spicy heat of the yukkaejang (beef soup) and the meaty bite of the kalbi (rib-cut beef), cooked on the table-top barbecue. Bibimbap and light tofu jeon (silken tofu in a delicate batter) provided a nice counterpoint to the strong flavours from the grill. All in all, not far off perfection.
Time Out Eating & Drinking Guide 2009
Professional man with sense of humour looking for like minded people for fun adventure and new experiances( this means visiting new places etc not...
I discovered this a few months ago after coming back from Korea and having a craving for the food that I was now in love with. The food her is very authentic - the bibimbap spot on and the dumplings excellent. I have not tried the Bulgogi but can't wait to give it a go on my next visit. The service is a little slow and unattentive but if the standard of food keeps at this level, i will keep going back.
Do not come here.
I used to love this place and even organised a work function here, but this place has become bad and is a disappointment on all fronts:
* the worst service you will find
* salty food
* lukewarm miso soup
* overpriced menu
* small portions
No time to look at the menu.
They cleared plates from around us, brought out a quarter of orange (meant for dessert) and gave us the bill - all WHILE we were eating.
the final insult was they interrupted my partner while he was on the phone to tell us the restaurant was closed and we had to leave NOW.
We arrived for lunch at 2pm, and finished in 1 hour. The thing is, there are no signs to say opening hours on the door and when we arrived the waiter who seated us did not warn us that they were going to close or that it may be rushed at any point.
This was the worst experience and I concur with the other reviews. Do not come here. You deserve to be treated better.
Great food and good service. Having tried other Korean restaurants in London, this is probably the best with regards to the quality of the food and the choices available. We had some mandoo and clear glass noodles which were both wonderful however the highlight was the table BBQ. The marinated beef Kalbi & Bulgogi were fantastic. Tender and full of flavour! The spicy pork bbq is also worth trying for that extra kick. The stone bowl rice with mixed vegetables also hit the right spot! Full and satisfied.
We would recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting to enjoy a good Korean meal. We'll be back for sure.
Very disappointing. I don't know whether the management has changed, but we came here a few years ago and had a great meal. We returned to: (1) rude and slow service, (2) items we had ordered failing to turn up (3) items which didn't turn up being added to our bill anyway, (4) when we pointed this out the waiter was aggressive rather than apologetic, and (5) the food was very poor quality (the korean barbecue tasted like dogfood and the raw beef was still frozen). Can't wait for the re-opening of Ran to get our next Korean fix.
Poor service and poor quality food. The Korean bbq was disappointing and given that that is the highlight of any Korean meal, we will not go back.
Appallingly rude service and overpriced, mediocre food. The classica Korean dish of bulgogi and kalbi have a strange mushy texture. We will not return. The best Korean in London is Ran on Great Marlborough Street
Excellent food and prompt courteous service. I am looking forward to going back very soon!
