Out of the concrete expanse of the Tustin Housing Estate on Old Kent Road grows something of a culinary rose. Judge the 805 Bar Restaurant not by its humble exterior, nor by its simple white decor (of similar hue to the praise garments worn by members of the Nigerian Celestial Church of Christ). The fact that late on a Sunday night its two spacious dining rooms were heaving with well-to-do Nigerians tells you all you need to know. Since 2001, 805 has been serving up southern Nigerian staples with the odd European flourish to customers from far and wide. On the menu, you’ll find a varied selection of west African favourites such as jollof rice, moyin moyin and egusi (ground melon seeds, served with spinach), alongside the restaurant’s signature dish, monika (marinated grilled fish with chilli sauce). The asaro – a mashed yam pottage cooked with seasoned tomato and onion – was gorgeous, served with tilapia and plantain. Ewa aganyin (lightly spiced smoked beans, also accompanied by fried plantain) was laudable too. Service comes with a smile, and the portions are as hearty as the atmosphere.

The food is to a good standard and well presented.
However what really lets this place down is the incredibly poor service.
The waiters are lazy, dont bother writing down your order (its almost like they think that will impress) and they always get the order wrong! if you have more than six people eating i can guarantee that at least one of the meals will be served late or not at all.
805 is average for fine dining type, but would be considered excellent for those that are used to dining at the normal average Nigerian eating places.
More investment into the service would make this a great place to dine.
All i can say is incredible. Took my Nigerian mum there to celebrate her 50th, and it completely lived up to the occassion. Whether you are Nigerian or not, i can't recommend it enough!
I had been puting away going to this place for a while but I'm sure glad I did make it. The service was good and the food even better. There was a slight delay when we asked that we wanted a take away, but overall it was a good family outing. Keep it up!
The atmosphere is quite good. And the service as well. The food is absolutely delicious. I highly recommend it.
My fav Naija restuarant in Europe. I occasionally travel all the way from East Midland in England for a treat at 805.
Guess how i came about this site? Searching for 805's post code...doing my thing there again tonight.
Monica here i come!!!
Great food, great service. Really well run, I hear the owner though Nigerian is an ex Army Major
great especially the grilled fish! Wow
I was really impressed with 805. The waiters were courteous and the food was very good . service was good though pricey but it was well worth it. Other Nigerian restaurants should borrow a leaf from 805. Please keep it up ... and the charming waitress that served us made it delightful. Well done
I've been to quite a few Nigerian and non-Nigerian restaurants in my time, particularly 805, and one lesson that has served me well in life is 'honour begets honour', i.e. you talk to someone like they're nobody, they'll most likely talk to you like they're nobody, and like you're nobody too.
The main reason I go to 805, and take guests from abroad there too, is because of their excellent customer service - yes, the food is pricey, but I can't fault the customer service - why?
I call the ladies and gents servingme 'Sir' and 'Ma'am', and they treat me with equal respect. If there's no customers waiting, I ask what they're doing to move on from waiting, and some are graduates doing a second degree, working to pay their school fees, rather than 'nobodies'.
On the other hand, I've sometimes witnessed the way 'our people' will yell at these people, not say 'please' or 'thank you', whilst these 'waiters' grin and bear the rantings spewed out at them.
805 is EXPENSIVE and not for everyday dining, but justifiably so and if you can afford it, it's a good place to eat, OCCASSIONALLY!
Finally, just remember, honour begets honour, it will get you far.
Food is good service is very bad. 805 is so overrated and I think it because most Nigeria restaurants are very poor ( in terms of standards) in comparison
